Parliament's leadership approves proposal for joint declaration calling on President Basescu's for honorary resignation

At a joint meeting on Monday, the standing bureaus of the Chamber of Deputies and Senate approved a proposal put forth by Senate Chairman Calin Popescu-Tariceanu that Parliament adopt a joint declaration calling on President Traian Basescu for honorary resignation.

Tariceanu explained that the MP groups will be allowed to table amendments to the declaration by next day in the evening, so that a joint plenary session of Parliament may be convened for Wednesday at 10:00hrs, EEST, to approve the document.

'As far as the joint declaration of Parliament is concerned, under which Romania's President is called upon for honorary resignation, the proposal passed and we established that by tomorrow at 18:00hrs, the MP groups may table amendments or extra text. On Wednesday morning, at 09:00hrs, the standing bureaus will analyse the proposals to integrate them with the declaration Parliament is to pass, while at 10:00hrs the plenary session will follow to discuss and approve the declaration,' Tariceanu said after the joint meeting of the standing bureaus.

As far as the request of the opposition Democratic Liberal Party (PDL) is concerned that a request for the resignation of Prime Minister Victor Ponta be also included in the declaration, he said he recommended PDL to table a motion of censure.

'The request is very interesting. In the case of the prime minister, there is a well-established constitutional and democratic procedure, including in Romania, namely that when the prime minister is called upon to resign, a motion of censure is lodged and Parliament votes on it. That is what I advised PDL and the National Liberal Party (PNL) to do, to initiate a motion of censure to dismiss the prime minister, if they want that,' said...
