Infectious Disease Outbreak Threatens Flood-Hit Varna's Asparuhovo

Bulgaria's port city of Varna Apauhovo district is at risk of an outbreak of hepatitis, dysentery and salmonellosis after last week's devastating floods.

So far there is only one person infected with salmonellosis, according to the Regional Health Inspectorate (RHI), Bulgaria's 24 chasa reports.

According to Dr. Svetla Staneva, RHI Varna head, the incubation period of hepatitis A is 20 to 40 days, so it is still too early to foresee the spread of the disease.

The latest tests on 21-22 June showed that water in Asparouhovo and the nearby Galata district is drinkable.

The seawater on the beach in Asparuhovo is yet to be tested. After the two tidal waves that hit the district, there are still huge muddy patches floating in the water, Vesti.bg informs.

On Wednesday, the kindergartens and the schools in Asparuhovo were open after being disinfected.

The Asparuhovo district is recovering after the extreme floods which hit the area last week, claiming 12 lives and causing serious damages.
