LGBT population still among most discriminated against

BELGRADE - Commissioner for Protection of Equality Nevena Petrusic wished all the best to the LGBT population in Serbia for the International Pride Day, noting that discrimination on the grounds of sexual orientation is still widespread in Serbia and that the LGBT population is one of the most discriminated against.

“This day is yet another chance to show that we are committed to the idea of human rights, tolerance, appreciation of differences and acceptance of others and different people. Everyone has the right to live freely and without fear, regardless of their sexual orientation,” Petrusic said in a written statement sent to the media.

She adds that opinion polls show discouraging results for our society as a whole, as one in two citizens thinks that homosexualism is a disease that should be cured, and over 80 percent of respondents do not want LGBT people in their family.

“Because of all of this, the holding of a pride parade this year will be of importance for all citizens of Serbia, as it will demonstrate that we are tolerant as a society, and ready to appreciate the differences,” the commissioner believes.

She notes that the mere event is not enough, but rather continuous work is needed in order to counter prejudices and discriminatory stances, primarily among children and young people through the education system, but also through joint efforts of all public bodies, institutions, civil sector and the media.
