Government spokeswoman warns PPC unionists against blackouts

Government spokeswoman Sofia Voultepsi on Tuesday warned GENOP, the union representing workers at Public Power Corporation (PPC), that civil mobilization would be considered if unionists followed through on blackout threats.

GENOP is opposing government plans for the partial privatization of state-owned PPC.

"Unionists cannot intervene in the strategic decisions of the government," Voultepsi told Skai on Tuesday. "They do not own PPC or the electricity and they have no right to shut it down, sabotaging the government."

"The unionists will not rule; the country will not become their hostage," Voultepsi said, adding that "the government will take every measure to ensure this."

The bill for the sale of one part of PPC is to be submitted to Parliament on Wednesday, with Voultepsi saying that changes are being made to the original draft.
