ForMin Corlatean: Romania to be very committed in supporting Italy's EU Presidency priorities

Romanian Foreign Minister Titus Corlatean said on Wednesday that Romania will be "very committed" in supporting the priorities of Italy's EU Presidency, adding that Bucharest shares the objective of a "stronger, more integrated" Europe.

"Romania will be very committed in supporting Italy's priorities when taking over the six-months rotating presidency and a successful term. ... Romania fully shares the objectives of a stronger, more integrated and solidary Europe, as reflected in the program of objectives of the Italian presidency," Corlatean told a joint press conference with Italy's Ambassador to Bucharest Diego Brasioli, organized on occasion of the launch of Italy's six-month presidency of the Council of the European Union.

The chief of Romanian diplomacy expressed confidence that the Italian presidency will be "dynamic and successful."

Corlatean referred to the process aimed at renewing the European institutions, which will take place during the term of the Italian presidency, saying that Romania will support the "political effort" this process entails.

"I share the wide concern as regards the outcome of the European electoral process, on the rise of anti-European and extremist tunes. It's a strong signal ... it will entail a deepened approach at European political level and inside institutional structures, an intelligent and coordinated response by the political will of the European political players who support the European project. We must find ways to prevent the erosion process of the European project and support the EU liberties, fundamental rights, values, which are a huge gain, they are actually the engine of the European project," Corlatean said.
