Romania doubles its Q1 exports of wheat, maize

Romania has exported 1.646 million tonnes of wheat and maize over the first quarter of 2014, twice the amount of the 2013 Q1, which was 755,400 tonnes, Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (MADR) data show.

Wheat contributed with 926,000 tonnes and maize with 720,000 tonnes to the exports of cereals; the respective revenues were 195.5 million euros and 259.2 million euros.

According to data received by AGERPRES on Friday, total income from wheat and maize exports was above 454.7 million euros in January-March 2014, or 39 percent of the total agri-food exports of 1,169.8 million euros.

The 2013 Q1 figure was 262.6 million euros for wheat and maize.

On the other hand, Romania has imported 108,100 tonnes of these cereals over the same three-month period, slightly down year-on-year from 111,600 tonnes. The figures of these imports in 2014 Q1 were 83,100 tonnes and 15.5 million euros for wheat, and 25,000 tonnes and 35.6 million euros for maize.

MADR posted a positive trade balance of 9.4 million euros for agri-foodstuff in Q1, compared to a 308.9 million euros deficit in the first quarter of 2013.

Romania's agri-foodstuff exports amounted to almost 1.17 billion euros in Q1 2014, up 38.4 percent year-on-year, while imports advanced only 0.6 percent to 1.16 billion euros. AGERPRES
