UDMR's Verestoy Attila: UDMR stays at rule; It's Kelemen Hunor's choice to resign

UDMR (Democratic Union of Hungarian in Romania) Senator, Verestoy Attila, on Friday told RFI broadcaster that, in his opinion, UDMR should stay at rule. Moreover, he stated that a possible resignation of the UDMR leader from the government doesn't necessarily mean the party should leave too.

Asked whether, in his opinion, UDMR should stay at rule, the Senator replied:

'Of course! Although I do not deny that Mr Chairman Kelemen Hunor definitely has this option to resign and that he could decide to resign, while there is no reason for me to dispute his decision [...] I will not challenge his right to do so (to resign from the government — editor's note). But this doesn't necessarily mean that UDMR should also automatically leave (the government — editor's note), since we are going to lose the precise platform that we need in order to be able to solve this matter.'

Verestoy Attila appreciated that the problem UDMR is facing right now 'can be solved through dialogue, while trying to reach a consensus and cooperate and also, if possible, by remaining in the ruling coalition.'

Moreover, the UDMR Senator rejected the position assumed by the Foreign Affairs Minister Titus Corlatean regarding the citizens' initiative dubbed "Minority SafePack" in which the Union is co-signer.

'Everybody seems to believe that we have some weapons hidden in our luggage for attacking the Romanian state. There is no such weapon. On the contrary, I believe that the Romanian state's interests are not the ones that were mentioned by Mr Corlatean,' said the UDMR politician.
