Speaker Zgonea welcomes US charge d'affaires Thompson

Speaker of the Chamber of Deputies Valeriu Zgonea on Thursday welcomed incoming US charge d'affaires Dean Thompson on a presentation visit to discuss the legislative agenda of Romania related to the finalisation of instruments that contribute to clarifying incompatibilities and conflicts of interest.

The Chamber of Deputies reports in a press release that Zgonea voiced readiness to extend the support of the entire Romanian Parliament during the term in office of the new US charge d'afaires to strengthen dialogue and cooperation on legislative topics of interest to both Romania and the US.

Also discussed was the approval of a Code of conduct for the Romanian MPs, comparing the draft code with similar codes elsewhere in the European Union.

Zgonea underscored the role of inter-institutional public consultations in the drawing up of a legal framework for a democratic state, underscoring that he will further encourage the demarche.

He also assured Thompson of full support and openness to get him to know the Romanian institutions, particularly in terms of increasing the response of the Romanian Legislature to Romanian and European realities.

The two officials exchanged opinions on the excellent stage of the bilateral relationship between Romania and the US and underscored a privileged nature of cooperation thanks to objectives included in the Strategic Partnership between Romania and the US.

Also attending the meeting was outgoing charge d'affaires Duane Butcher.
