Democracy 'retreated' during crisis, says Papoulias

The crisis caused the democratic process to "retreat" and that is probably the most dramatic side effect of the financial crisis noted Greek President Karolos Papoulias in a statement marking the restoration of democracy in Greece following the fall of the military dictatorship 40 years ago.

Papoulias was expected to visit Parliament on Thursday for the unveiling of an exhibition commemorating the beginning of the so-called Metapolitefsi era, the transition from the rule of the colonels to Parliamentary democracy.

The Parliament display is expected to open to the public in September.
