City of Athens to create own electronic operations center

The City of Athens is poised to create an electronic nerve center that will improve the municipality’s efficiency and even go as far as helping monitor public property.

A tender for the 6-million-euro scheme, 95 percent of which will be financed by European Union structural funds, is due to be launched in the fall. It should then take about 15 months to build the electronic operations centre, which will allow residents to conduct much of their interaction with the municipality electronically.

"We want residents to be able to submit a request electronically and then observe its progress," Yiannis Ramfos, who is responsible for the project, told Kathimerini. "This scheme will be unique and it will help the municipality and city on many levels."

The technology will also help municipal officials monitor some 100 CCTV cameras they plan to install at playgrounds and schools as part of a pilot scheme.
