Kr.Georgieva: Bulgaria Likely to Get High-Profile Portfolio in New EC

Kristalina Georgieva has vowed to keep working for Bulgaria's good image in her next term in office at the European Commission.

In a Thursday interview for the Bulgarian National Radio, Georgieva, European Commissioner for International Cooperation, Humanitarian Aid and Crisis Response in the outgoing EC panel, underscored that she still had the chance to become High Representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, adding that Bulgaria had the opportunity to earn greater responsibilities in the next European Commission panel.

She stated that Brussels and other EU capitals still believed that the decision on the High Representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy had not yet been made and her name was still among the candidates.

Somewhat embittered by the negative comments in Bulgaria, Georgieva noted that it was sad that only Sofia claimed that she stood no chance of winning the post.

Georgieva said that the talks on other possible nominees would be held with the caretaker government in the coming weeks.

She argued that her work at the World Bank and her first term in office as EU Commissioner made her a senior candidate for the next EC panel and opened the way to a wider range of portfolios for which Bulgaria could negotiate.

She went on to advise the caretaker government to start the preparations for Bulgaria's accession to the European banking supervision and the eurozone.

Georgieva suggested that the developments of the past few weeks had shown that Bulgaria's accession to the European banking supervision mechanism would bring benefits, adding that she was in favor of the move.
