PM Ponta wishes "Happy Birthday!" to Ukrainian people celebrating Independence Day

Prime Minister Vctor Ponta wishes "Happy Birthday!" to the Ukrainian people, on the occasion of the Independence Day, also assuring them of the entire Romania's and the EU's support.

"Happy Birthday to all Ukrainians on their celebration of the Independence Day! I wish you that you to overcome all the difficult moments, Romania and the European Union are beside you! Ponta wrote on his wall on Facebook, on Sunday.

Ukraine celebrates its National Day on August 24, the day marking the moment when back in 1991 the country adopted the Declaration of Independence from the USSR. A referendum and the first presidential elections were held in this country on December 1, 1991 and a new Constitution of Ukraine was adopted in 1996, as a consequence of which Ukraine became a semi-presidential republic.

Ukraine is currently a member of UN, OSCE, the Council of Europe and WTO.

On February 1, 1992, Romania and Ukraine established diplomatic ties at embassy level. Romania was among the first country to recognise the independence of Ukraine. AGERPRES
