Bulgaria's President to Visit Baku Sept 23-24 to Discuss Energy Cooperation

Bulgarian President Rosen Plevneliev will visit Azerbaijan in the third week of September (23-24) to take part in the celebrations for the 20th anniversary of the so-called "Contract of the Century."

The event in Baku, which marks the 20th anniversary of the signing of a contract on the development of oil fields in the Azerbaijani sector of the Caspian Sea, is to be attended by the heads of state of Turkey, Greece and Albania, according to Azerbaijan's news agency ARA.

During the visit, Plevneliev is to discuss energy cooperation with Azerbaijan, according to diplomatic sources cited by the local Trend News Agency.

Meanwhile, Plevneliev announced in a Tuesday interview for Turkish news agency Anadolu that Bulgaria intended to buy Azeri gas.

He emphasized the significance of the TANAP and TAP gas pipeline projects for Bulgaria, adding that they were of strategic importance for all European countries.

Plevneliev, as cited by money.bg, claimed that the launch of the gas transmission system between Turkey and Bulgaria would allow Bulgaria to receive gas supplies from Azerbaijan, as well as from Iran, Qatar, and other Middle East countries.

He said that the TAP and TANAP gas pipeline projects would allow the transit of natural gas from Azerbaijan's Shah Deniz field to a number of European countries, including Bulgaria.
