Miscevic: EU is moving target that we must follow

BELGRADE - As a country in membership negotiations with the EU, Serbia must align not only with its legal framework and practice, but also the Union's new developments, head of Serbia's EU ačešion negotiating team Tanja Miscevic has said.

"The Union is a moving target that we must follow as we need to be aware that we will become its member in the circumstances that the Union itself will be in at that moment," Miscevic said in an article she wrote for the Belgrade-based daily Danas.

"We surely need to ćeck if the objectives of the EU and our own goals converge at some point, as we live in the same crisis-laden circumstances and we can get out of them by cooperating with strong European economies and joint markets," she said.

Miscevic pointed out that the EU itself had observed slow growth, high unemployment rate, lack of public and private investment, macroeconomic imbalances, public debt, lack of competitiveneš and the need for structural reforms.

"These observations sound as if they were made in the proceš of European integration of Serbia. What they really mean is that we and the EU indeed have the same starting point in an attempt to overcome the crisis," the head of the Serbian negotiating team said.

"The Union (and Serbia) should improve the entrepreneurship climate and enable the creation of jobs through better ačeš to finance, and also increase investment, improve labor market, and free the economy from the grip of taxes and unnecešary administrative burden," said Miscevic.
