Renovation of Golubac Fortress begins

GOLUBAC - Serbian Minister of Trade and Tourism Rasim Ljajic, Head of the EU Delegation in Serbia Michael Davenport, representatives of the Austrian Development Agency and Golubac mayor marked on Wednesday the beginning of the renovation of Golubac Fortress which dates back to the 14th century.

The minister underscored that the renovation works should be completed in two years, in July 2016, and expressed gratitude to the EU for the project the value of which adds up to EUR 6.6 million.

Ljajic noted that 10 towers will be repaired, ramparts and walls would be reconstructed, while the road would be moved because of the construction of a new tunnel.

He stated that the fortress constitutes an excellent basis for further tourism development, adding that the aim of the works is to turn Golubac Fortress on the Danube River into a tourist brand. He also called on all potential investors to contribute to the creation of conditions necessary for tourism development through the public and private partnership model.

Ljajic noted that the Danube River occupies a very important place in the tourism development strategy, and added that four out of 14 master plans are connected to the Danube and its potentials.

Through the project, we want to contribute to the development of small and mid-size companies, help entrepreneurs recognise their interest in investments and make a contribution to the development of the entire region because tourism development will initiate the progress of other industrial branches as well, Ljajic said.
