Nikolic confers with Ban Ki-moon

NEW YORK - Serbian President Tomislav Nikolic met with UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly session in New York on Wednesday.

According to the readout of the meeting, Ban and Nikolic exchanged views on Serbia's EU integration process, the Belgrade-Pristina dialogue, the cooperation between the United Nations and Serbia, including Serbia's role in UN-mandated peacekeeping missions, as well as the country's upcoming OSCE Chairmanship.

Ban commended Serbia for its efficient response to the unprecedented floods. In the context of the Climate Summit, held before the formal start of the UN General Assembly session, Nikolic underscored the link between such natural disasters and climate change.

The meeting was also an opportunity for the UN Secretary-General and the Serbian president to exchange views on the situation in the Middle East, the fight against the Ebola virus, and the developments in Ukraine.

Nikolic attended the opening of the general debate of the 69th session of the UN General Assembly on Wednesday, and is scheduled to address the UNGA on Friday, September 26.

The president of Serbia had a series of bilateral meetings in New York on Wednesday.

Nikolic met with the presidents of Poland and Slovenia, Bronislaw Komorowski and Borut Pahor, respectively, and the Holy See Secretary of State Cardinal Pietro Parolin.

He previously conferred with Angolan Vice President Manuel Domingos Vicente and Latvian President Andris Berzins.

The Serbian president attended a reception on Tuesday evening hosted by US President Barack Obama for the world leaders gathered for a meeting of the UN General Assembly in New York.
