At least 11 people were killed and 40 others were injured during artillery shelling of the eastern Ukrainian city of Donetsk, a local hospital spokesman told RIA Novosti, Wednesday.

Earlier today, the self-proclaimed Donetsk People's Republic (DPR) Deputy PM Andrei Purgin reported that 8 people were killed when a shell hit a taxi van, where they were sitting. Another 2 people died when a shell hit a school building.

No children were killed in the shelling of the school, the DPR‘s Interior Ministry said, as cited by Itar-Tass. The ministry's press service added that parents and teachers became victims of the shelling.

Later the death toll from the shelling has reached 11.

A ceasefire between the Ukrainian government and the Donetsk and Lugansk People's Republics' authorities was signed in Minsk, Belarus, on September 5.

DPR Deputy PM Purgin has also noted that, despite the ceasefire agreement, daily shooting continues in the vicinity of the Donetsk airport.

Russia's Foreign Ministry has described the attack as a cynical and blatant breach of international law.
