MPs meet with US diplomat

BELGRADE - Serbian parliament's Deputy Speaker Igor Becic and members of parliamentary groups met with Thomas Yazdgerdi, Foreign Service Officer at the U.S. Department of State, and jointly agreed that the Serbian-US bilateral relations have improved.

According to a release issued on Friday, Becic pointed out that the relations between the two countries are very good and constantly improving, noting that Serbia is committed to the prompt resolution of all open issues, such as the trial for the murder of brothers Bitici, US citizens of Albanian descent, during the NATO bombing in 1999, and the torching of the US Embassy in Belgrade in 2008, during the protests sparked by Pristina's unilateral declaration of Kosovo-Metohija independence.

Becic added that Serbian Interior Ministry has formed task forces to handle these cases and has already achieved the first results.

Deputy parliament speaker underlined the importance of strengthening the bilateral ties in all areas, particularly in culture, science, political and parliamentary cooperation.

Yazdgerdi said that the visit to Serbia is his first visit to the region, noting that this points to the significance of relations with Serbia.

He expressed hope that all open issues will soon be resolved and commended the Serbian government for its readiness to engage in negotiations with Pristina.

Expressing his satisfaction with the bill of amendments to the criminal code entering the parliamentary procedure, Yazdgerdi noted that Serbia has proved a partner of the US in its fight against global terrorism.
