Kelemen Hunor: Romania must accept it is multinational state

The leader of the Hungarian Democratic Union of Romania (UDMR) Kelemen Hunor, running for president in the early November elections told a public debate in this central-western Romanian city late on Thursday that Romanians must accept their country is a multinational state and that trust is a pre-condition to a good relation between the ethnic groups.

'The question is whether we can make the Romanian society accept that this is our country and here we are at home. We must start from facts when speaking of the constitution. We must say some 6 to 7 percent of the population is ethnic Hungarian and we consider ourselves citizens of this country and we want to preserve our culture and our dignity. It is about the trust lying at the foundation of every society. The successful societies functioning well are those where the trust level is high. Where there is no trust, there are conflicts. It is important the Romanians accept that Romania is a multinational state', Kelemen told the debates, according to the official translation from Hungarian.
