Kocijancic: Serbia should stay on pro-European path

BRUSSELS - The EU expects Serbia to preserve its pro-European orientation after the visit of Russian President Vladimir Putin to Serbia, said Maja Kocijancic as spokesperson of High EU Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Catherine Ashton.

We have acknowledged the forthcoming visit of President Putin, spokesperson Maja Kocijancic told reporters on Tuesday and added that a peaceful solution for the crisis in Ukraine is a priority and the most important matter for the EU.

We expect Serbia to preserve its pro-European position during Putin's visit, she said.

Kocijancic recalled that Serbia, as a country negotiating EU membership, has accepted the obligation to gradually adjust its policy to the European legislature.

Asked whether by this she is referring to European sanctions against Russia, Kocijancic replied that this point covers the overall foreign policy of Serbia and the EU and not just the sanctions in particular.
