President Basescu: Ponta must admit he was covert officer of Foreign Information Service (SIE)

President Traian Basescu has stated on Monday evening that Prime Minister Victor Ponta was a covert officer of the Foreign Intelligence Service (SIE) between 1997 - 2001, which explains his 'ascension' in the General Prosecutor's Office.

"Victor Ponta must admit that between 1997 — 2001 he was a covert officer for SIE (...). He was a SIE officer, which explains his ascension from the Prosecutor's office attached to the district court directly to the General Prosecutor's Office", said the head of state, at Realitatea TV, a private broadcaster.
