Bulgaria's Democracy Turns 25

Bulgarians mark on November 10 the 25th anniversary of the overthrow of the communist regime amidst 150 days of protests against the Socialist-led government.

Boryana Dimitrova from Alpha Research, one of Bulgaria's leading pollsters, told the Bulgarian National Radio on Monday that a "nostalgic [and] idealized image of communism" is starting to dominate over society.

She warned "no educational or cultural institution has engaged in a systematic effort to show or reveal the mechanisms, ideology and working of this regime - neither the media nor school, nor universities and museums [have]. Each one of these institutions has pulled back, letting the young generation to obtain knowledge of socialism only through the stories of their relatives and acquaintances which in time naturally fade... and in the end are idealized."
