PSD's Ponta: Russian Federation, highest security risk for Romania

Prime Minister Victor Ponta, the candidate of the electoral alliance made up of the Social Democratic Party (PSD), the National Union for Romania's Progress (UNPR) and the Conservative Party (PC) in the presidential elections, believes that Vladimir Putin and the Russian Federation currently represent the highest security risk to our region and to Romania after 1989.

'I believe Vladimir Putin and the Russian Federation, because we are not talking about persons, we are talking about states, currently represent to our region and to Romania the highest security risk after 1989. I believe our legit interests, the Republic of Moldova first of all, which must follow its European path, are clearly clashing, since we are supporting Moldova to join the European Union and the Russian Federation wants to prevent it from that. This is also valid for Ukraine, for Georgia. Beware, this is valid — maybe you didn't expect it — yesterday I met Serbia's Prime Minister who told a press conference that Serbia's path is in the European Union. You can imagine he didn't incite the other side to enthusiasm. From this stand, the Russian Federation, led by Mr Putin, represents the highest risk for security and for the strategic elections of the neighbouring countries, which to us are the most important: Moldova, Ukraine, Georgia, Serbia,' Ponta said on Antena 3 private television broadcaster on Sunday.
