Wilhelm hopes Serbia will become EU member soon

BELGRADE - German Ambassador to Serbia Heinz Wilhelm has said that the fall of the Berlin Wall helped unite not only Germany, but Europe as well, adding that he hopes Serbia will soon become a member of the EU.

The fall of the Berlin Wall was not an event just for Germany, it instead changed Europe as well, he stated at the celebration of the 25th anniversary of the fall ofthe Berlin Wall on Sunday, adding that if the wall had not fallen, Europe would have been unable to unite, so in that sense, this day was important for Serbia, Germany and Europe.

Countries of the former Warsaw Pact are already EU members, he noted, adding that he was glad Serbia had started its accession talks with the EU exactly 25 years after the fall of the Berlin Wall.

The disappearance of the Berlin Wall ushered a new era, he remarked, pointing out that it was a historic event that led to the end of a bipolar world.

The world is now multipolar and Europe has found its place in it, he underscored.

Wilhelm hopes Europe will be an even stronger factor in the future with Serbia as its member.

Visitors at the cultural centre Parobrod were able to watch the celebration in Berlin live via a video link and afterwards a 90-minute documentary Train to Freedom.
