Viskovic: Edi Rama's move undiplomatic

BELGRADE - The undiplomatic move by Albanian Prime Minister Edi Rama thwarted the ultimate goal of his visit to Serbia - a major breakthrough in the relations between the two countries, says former Serbian ambassador to Berlin Ivo Viskovic, a professor at the Belgrade Faculty of Political Sciences.

Serbia had extended its hand in good faith, and it was expected that it will be accepted, Viskovic told International Radio Serbia.

With the provocation of calling on Serbia to accept the self-proclaimed independence of Kosovo, the Albanian prime minister obliterated all the positive efforts made up to that point to turn a new page in the two countries' relations, as well as the agreements signed between Serbia and Albania, Viskovic said.

Asked why there have been no reactions from Western officials to the Albanian prime minister's statement, Viskovic said that he did not expect public statements to be made and that he believes that this is done through diplomatic channels.

It is important that foreign statespersons see and understand what actually happened even if they do not say it aloud - I think that Western leaders have finally realised that Serbia is not the one that is causing problems and refusing to cooperate, but that the responsibility rests with the other side, Viskovic concluded.

Abusing Serbia's hospitality, Rama said at a press conference on Monday that Kosovo's independence is a done deal, urging Serbia to recognise the independence of its own province.

Vucic responded that he does not see what Rama has to do with Kosovo. "Under the Constitution, Kosovo-Metohija is a part of Serbia, and has had and will have nothing to do with Albania," the Serbian prime minister said.
