German official pledges continued support

BELGRADE -- German Vice Chancellor Sigmar Gabriel has expressed the strong support of his country's government to the reforms of Serbia on the road to the EU.

"I promise that the German government will continue to do everything to support you on your journey, and take advantage of all the tools and opportunities to expand our relations," Gabriel said in Belgrade late on Sunday, during a reception at the start of a two-day visit to Serbia, during which he leads a business delegation.

Gabriel, who is also the Minister of Economy and Energy, said he was convinced that the 40 German businesspeople in the delegation brought with them "concrete projects."

He said Serbia had taken bold steps for the development of the economy, and measures to move close to the EU, adding that Germany supports reforms to improve the rule of law, combat corruption and strength freedom of expression.

Prime Minister Aleksandar Vučić also addressed the reception to say that Serbia and Germany cooperate well and that the primary political and economic goal is joining the European Union.

"We will do our best to move closer to the EU and the rest will depend on you, it is your decision whether to accept Serbia," said he.

Vučić added that Serbia "will do everything possible to improve the business environment" and that he was "certain that citizens of Serbia will support the difficult reforms because they know that it is for the benefit of Serbia".

Despite all the difficulties, Serbia will be able to overcome all the problems - said Vučić.
