Croatia Sets Presidential Polls For December 28
Croatia will go to the polls this Christmas after government spokesman Nikola Jelic confirmed on Wednesday that the first round of the presidential elections will be on December 28.
If a second round takes place, it will be held two weeks after, on January 11. This will take place if no candidate receives over 50 per cent of the votes.
Earlier this month, January 11 was mentioned as a possible date for the first round, but this was deemed unconstitutional, since all the procedures must end by January 19, a month before the end of mandate of the current President, Ivo Josipovic.
Every hopeful needs 10,000 signatures of voters supporting him or her as the candidate for President.
President Josipovic is seen as having the best chance of winning, with recent public opinion surveys giving him the support of 42.7 per cent of voters.
Second in line is the candidate of the main opposition centre-right Croatian Democratic Union, HDZ, Kolinda Grabar Kitarovic. She is well behind in the polls with the support of only 27.8 per cent of voters.
Four more candidates have declared their candidacy: Milan Kujundzic for the far right, Ante Djapic for the right, Ivan Grubisic for the left and Ivan Rude, standing as an independent. None is seen as likely to win more than 10 per cent of the votes.
