Nikolic, Szijjarto: Bilateral cooperation greatly improved

BELGRADE - The cooperation between Serbia and Hungary has improved significantly, which is best reflected by the fact that the two countries achieved a record level of trade last year, Serbian President Tomislav Nikolic and Hungarian Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade Peter Szijjarto said in Belgrade on Thursday.

Nikolic and Szijjarto said that Serbia and Hungary need to become infrastructurally connected, noting the need to reconstruct the railway line from Belgrade to Budapest and build new border crossings, Nikolic's presidential press office said in a statement.

Serbia's wish is to become a full member of the European Union as soon as possible, and until that happens, we will strive to create a modern, orderly state according to European standards to ensure better living conditions for all our citizens, President Nikolic said.

Minister Szijjarto said that Hungary strongly supports Serbia on its European path, and added that his country believes that the European Union should expedite the enlargement process.

For this reason, maintaining good relations among the countries of the region is something that Hungary sees as very important, he said.

Nikolic and Szijjarto once again noted the significance of the Hungarian national minority in Serbia as a very important link between the two countries, the statement said.
