Chairman of the Hungarian Democratic Union of Romania (UDMR) Kelemen Hunor announced his formation will leave the government.

The decision was made in the northwestern city of Cluj-Napoca, by the UDMR Standing Council, after more than five hours of debates.

A final decision will be made by the Union Representatives Council (CRU) to take place on December 13.

"The CRU recommendation is to leave the government coalition and continue to do what we know very clear it has to be done, we go back and take our seats in our community and deal with our community's matters, and in the Parliament we shall support all the approaches which mean a positive step as regards the communities, the people, the citizens and their future," stated Kelemen Hunor.

He also said that the Prime Minister was informed about the UDMR's intention to quit government, so "he didn't learn of it from the media," added he.

Eventually, the UDMR chair said the Ponta Government stability didn't depend on UDMR's presence in the government.

"I've noticed that even without us the Ponta Government has got majority, it doesn't depend on our presence in the Government, it has this majority in the Parliament, so the political stability does not depend on our participation in the government. We don't want to create instability, we don't want to get governments off. (...) We find it equally necessary the further dialogue with all political forces, with those governing firstly (...) I believe that we'll further support all approaches which for each citizen, the Hungarian nationals of Romania included mean a step forward, the growth of the living standard, of the salaries," Kelemen Hunor added.
