Romanian embassy marks holiday with reception

BELGRADE -- Romania lends strong support to Serbia, both on political and technical levels, along its EU accession pathway, says Romanian Ambassador to Serbia Daniel Banu.

He was addressing a reception held in Belgrade on the occasion of Romania's national holiday.

Romania and Serbia have a great development potential, particularly in the economic field, owing to geographical proximity, and in term of accession to the EU funds for financing and projects such as the Danube Strategy and IPA cross-border cooperation programs, Banu said.

The ambassador also pointed to the important role of the minorities which, as he put, offer great potential for strengthening of bilateral relations.

"I would like to reiterate that Romania is particularly interested in its minority in Serbia, including full respect of their specific rights and freedoms in line with the European standards and values," Banu said, adding that this will in future be an important aspect of the talks between the two countries' officials.

Banu noted that Romania marks its national holiday on December 1 when the National Assembly declared the Union of Transylvania with Romania in 1918.

The reception was attended by Serbian Parliament Speaker Maja Gojkovic, government officials, members of the diplomatic corps and other figures from the political, economic and cultural spheres.
