Bucharest Henri Coanda International Airport ranked last year on the 44th place in the EU in terms of number of passengers transiting it annually, according to the data released on Thursday by the European Statistical Office (Eurostat).

The largest airport in Romania served 7.6 million passengers in 2013, up by 7.3% from 2012. Of these, 5.9 million passengers arrived from or departed to destinations in the EU, 1.1 million with international destinations outside the EU, and 549,000 passengers flew domestically.

The largest airport in the EU in 2013 was London Heathrow, with 72 million passengers, up by 3.4% compared to 2012. The following places are held by Paris Charles de Gaulle (61 million passengers), Frankfurt — Main (57 million passengers), Amsterdam Schiphol (52 million passengers) and Madrid Barajas (39 million passengers).

According to the Eurostat's data, 842 million passengers traveled by plane in the EU last year, an advance of 1.7% compared to 2012. The largest number of people who flew by plane in 2013 was recorded in Great Britain (210 million, up by 3.6% compared to 2012), Germany (181 million, up by 1.2%), Spain (158 million, down by 1.3%), France (138 million, up by 2.3%) and Italy (115 million, down by 0.7%).

In Romania, almost 10.1 million passengers flew in 2013, up by 3.5% from 2012. Of these, 8.2 million passengers arrived from or departed to destinations in the EU, 1, 2 million to international destinations outside the EU, and 566,000 passengers flew domestically. AGERPRES
