Thermi motorist dies after car swept up by floodwaters

A 63-year-old motorist died Tuesday when his car was swept up by floodwaters on a country road near Scholari in the municipality of Thermi following heavy rainfall.

A 64-year-old woman who had been in the car with him managed to get out of the vehicle and was transferred to the hospital with symptoms of hypothermia.

Police had banned traffic on the road in question earlier in the day after a nearby stream broke its banks.

Continued heavy rainfall that has submerged thousands of hectares of farmland across northern Greece and flooded dozens of homes caused problems across much of the regional road network on Tuesday.
