Nikolic made Citizen of Honor of the Greek city of Serres

BELGRADE - Serbian President Tomislav Nikolic received on Wednesday in Belgrade the charter of the Greek city of Serres awarding him the title of Citizen of Honor.

Nikolic met with a delegation of Serres, headed by Mayor Petros Aggelidis.

"The traditional friendship between our nations is a good foundation for Serbia and Greece to join forces and overcome the deep economic crisis they are now battling," said Nikolic, adding that Serbia offers good prospects for foreign investors, particularly in terms of duty-free trade with a number of important markets, the Serbian President's media cooperation office said in a release.

Greece has made significant investments in the economy of Serbia and the positive experiences of Greek companies operating in the country serve as a good recommendation for other investors, said Nikolic.

The mayor of Serres presented to the Serbian president the charter by which this city in the northern Greece awards him the title of Citizen of Honor. On this occasion, Aggelidis also invited Nikolic to visit Serres in May next year and receive the key to the city in an official ceremony.

Serres represents the strong bond between the peoples of Serbia and Greece, noted Aggelidis. It was the capital of Stefan Dusan's Serbian Empire in the mid 14th century, which has left a significant mark on the city. Some of the frescoes decorating the local Monastery of St. John the Baptist depict the Serbian Emperor Dusan the Mighty, while Dusan's Code, the first Serbian constitution, was amended in Serres, the mayor added.
