DIMAR not poised to break apart, insists spokesman

Democratic Left’s parliamentary spokesman Nikos Tsoukalis has rejected a report claiming that his party may be on the point of breaking apart.

“This report is so far from the truth that I don’t need to comment on him,” Tsoukalis told Athina 984 FM.

Tsouaklis was one of three Democratic Left (DIMAR) MPs that, along with five independent lawmakers, proposed earlier this month a compromise between the government and the opposition.

The proposal included the government agreeing to early elections in return for the opposition voting for president. Prime Minister Antonis Samaras made proposal along these lines on Sunday but it was rejected by SYRIZA, DIMAR and Independent Greeks.

Tsoukalis and one of the other DIMAR MPs who made the original suggestion, Niki Founta, indicated they would not support the government’s candidate, Stavros Dimas.
