Gojkovic: Serbia will never impose sanctions on Russia

MOSCOW - Serbia will never impose sanctions on Russia, even if it joins the EU, Serbian Parliament Speaker Maja Gjokovic said at a meeting with State Dume members on Monday.

Serbia will never impose sanctions on Russia because sanctions have never done anyone any good and cannot help solve any problems, she stated.

The people of Russia suffer under international sanctions, and we know that dialogue alone is needed to solve problems, she stressed, according to a report from the Russian news agency Itar-Tass.

Although Serbia is trying to join the EU, such a strategic decision will not pose an obstacle to further development of the brotherly relatins with Russia, she remarked, adding that Russia would gain an honest and reliable partner within the EU.

The Serbian people support the country's EU integration and there is also consensus on the issue within the parliament, she said.

She met earlier with State Duma President Sergey Naryshkin, who said cooperation between Russia and Serbia had reached a strategic level.

Russia values the level of cooperation with Serbia and believes, based on a number of indicators, it has reached a strategic level, he noted, according to Itar-Tass.

It is of crucial importance in view of the lack of trust currently noticeable in Europe, he pointed out.

Russia and Serbia have always advocated respect for international law and they will continue to do so, Naryshkin emphasised, adding that effort was needed to ensure peace and security in Europe.

Gojkovic, who started a two-day visit to Russia on Monday, said there was plenty of room to develop cooperation between Russia and Serbia and between their parliaments.
