Nikolic expresses support for Iraq against terrorism

BELGRADE - Serbia supports Iraq in its battle against the terrorists of the Islamic State, Serbian President Tomislav Nikolic said on Monday at a meeting with Iraqi Ambassador Falah Abdulhasan Abdulsada.

"The situation Iraq, as well as the whole region, faces today has a great impact on Serbia, which has always fostered friendly relations with the Iraqi people," he said, according to the presidential press service.

Support from the international community to Iraq in the battle against terrorism would have to be a lot more tangible, he noted, adding that terrorism was a global problem all countries would have to face sooner or later unless it was dealt with immediately.

The UN should be the organisation to lead the civilised world in the fight against terrorism, Nikolic stressed.

The Iraqi ambassador thanked Nikolic for Serbia's support for Iraq, adding that he regretted that a number of Islamic State terrorists had come from some parts of Serbia, like Sandzak and Kosovo, the release says.

He agreed with Nikolic that it was a good thing Serbia had reacted quickly to those events and adopted a law that criminalises participation in foreign wars.

Both officials underscored that a quick end to the conflict in Iraq would benefit the cooperation between the two countries', allowing Serbian companies to return to that market as soon as possible, according to the release.
