The new wind-powered electricity production unit on the islet of Aghios Georgios will start operating by the end of this year, according to the plans of listed company Terna Energy.

This is the biggest investment in the sector in Greece, amounting to 150 million euros and concerning a plant with an output capacity of 73.2 megawatts. Its annual production will be able to cover the energy needs of 40,000 households, while it will contribute to savings of 60,000 tons of oil and reduce air pollution emissions by 180,000 tons per year, according to a company statement.

The islet of Aghios Georgios is located off Cape Sounio in southern Attica. The wind park under development there will operate as an independent unit for electricity production. Its interconnection with the national grid will be carried out through the construction of new infrastructure on the islet close to the wind turbines. The energy produced will end up at the Mikro Lavrio energy station via an underwater cable.

According to Terna Energy, this is the first onshore wind park with such a close resemblance to its offshore counterparts, as it will make the most of the high wind power capacity of the Aegean Sea.
