Man Dies After Falling in Elevator Shaft in Sofia

Man died after falling from the 14th floor into an elevator shaft in Sofia's residential district Serdika on Friday evening.

The man fell in the shaft after opening the door of the elevator, while the lift was on the upper 15th floor, the Bulgarian National Radio (BNR) reports.

An investigation will be carried out to establish the reasons for the opening of the door without the elevator being on the floor.

This is the latest in a series of incidents involving elevators in Bulgaria, electronic daily Dnevnik reminds.

A woman died and another was heavily injured when their elevator collapsed in Sofia in August 2014.

A similar incident claimed the life of one man in Sofia's residential district Geo Milev in October 2014.

A month later a visitor at a hotel in Velingrad was heavily injured after falling in an elevator shaft.

The State Agency for Metrological and Technical Surveillance carried out checks on the state of elevators in the country, which established that nearly a quarter of them are dangerous, which necessitated the introduction of new rules for their maintenance.
