Maricki Gadjanski receives Order of Benevolence Gold Cross

BELGRADE - Greek Ambassador to Serbia Constantine Economides presented on Wednesday classical arts professor of the Novi Sad University Ksenija Maricki Gadjanski with the Order of Benevolence Gold Cross.

Economides presented Maricki Gadjanski with this prestigious medal, given out to literary authors who have brought Greek literature closer to their people by translating Greek works, on behalf of Greek President Karolos Papoulias.

The translation work by the married couple Maricki Gadjanski represents the first systematic and serious attempt to inform the Serbian readers about Greece's modern literature, Economides remarked.

They translated into Serbian such great Greek poets as Constantine Cavafy and Giorgos Seferis, he noted.

The ambassador thanked Mrs. Maricki Gadjanski for her exceptional work, stressing that Greece would always encourage and support similar efforts that strengthen and improve the friendship between the two nations.

An expert on Greek history and culture, Maricki Gadjanski wrote a number of books and studies on Greek philosophy and culture. She and her late husband Ivan, who set up editions of Greek prose as a publisher, published about 100 books and worked hard of cultural cooperation between Serbia and Greece.

Accepting the medal, Maricki Gadjanski siad that their plans of organising a academic course in Balkan comparative literature had not been realised, and added modestly that perhaps the fact that the works of around 70 Greek poets were now available in Serbian was not a small achievement for one lifetime.
