Pajtic: EU enlargement must not come to a halt
BRUSSELS/BELGRADE- Bojan Patic, president of the Democratic Party (DS), underlined at meeting with European Parliament (EP) Rapporteur for Serbia David McAllister that the EU enlargement must not come to a halt, and urged the opening of the association negotiations with Serbia as soon as possible.
Pajtic said that Serbia and the Western Balkans should be on the top of the list of priorities of both the EP and the European Commission, reads a statement issued by the DS.
Pajtic conferred with McAllister on the rapporter's draft resolution on Serbia and the 222 amendments made by MEPs.
Pajtic and McAllister agreed that the values contained in the resolution cannot be brought into question, reads the statement.
Pajtic said that the DS supports the idea that the EP Subcommittee on Human Rights should send a special mission that will analyze the state of affairs in terms of media freedoms and human rights in Serbia.
McAllister informed the DS leader about the debate on the draft resolution on Serbia in the EP.
McAlllister said that in general, Serbia has a clear pro-European orientation, but that it still has a long way to joining the EU.
Serbia is a proud European nation, and it must be offered help on the EU pathway, since we know that we need it in order to have stability in the Western Balkans, McAllister said.
