Serbian defence minister visits Iraq

BAGHDAD - Serbian Defence Minister Bratislav Gasic conferred with Chairman of Iraqi Parliament's Committee on Security and Defense Hakim Al-Zamili concerning security challenges within his working visit to Iraq on Tuesday, and they agreed that terrorism and religious extremism constitute the greatest threats in this context.

Gasic and Al-Zamili agreed that these phenomena pose jeopardy to the free and democratic world.

Minister Gasic informed Al-Zamili about the measures the Serbian Defence Ministry is implementing with a view to improving the capacities and capabilities for Serbia's OSCE chairmanship and its contribution to the search for a solution to crisis situations, the Defence Ministry released.

After the meeting, Gasic underscored that the tradition of bilateral relations between Serbia and Iraq dates back over 60 years in history, and added that he is honoured to be one of the Serbian defence ministers to pay an official visit to Iraq after a while.

He noted that Serbia and Iraq have been cooperating in infrastructural, military, military-educational and military-industrial sectors for over 30 years now.
Gasic said that he would meet with Iraqi Defence Minister Khaled al-Obeidi and Iraqi President Muhammad Fuad Masum on Wednesday.

The goal of the visit is to render a definition of the priorities and projects of cooperation in the defence sector, the Ministry released earlier on Tuesday.

Gasic will conclude his visit to Iraq on February 26.
