Kukan urges opening of chapters in Serbia's EU talks

STRASBOURG - The first chapters in Serbia's negotiation process with the European Union should be opened as soon as possible, Eduard Kukan MEP, who heads the European Parliament delegation for Serbia, said on Wednesday.

Serbia has made progress in implementing reforms and therefore we have called for opening the chapters, Kukan said in a press release ahead of Wednesday's vote at a plenary session in Strasbourg on a proposed resolution on Serbia.

Further reforms in the field of rule of law are crucial, as are the judicial reform and highlighting the significance of independent bodies, he said.

Alignment to the EU foreign policy is also important, in particular with regards to relations with Russia, Kukan said.

Implementation of agreements reached as part of the Belgrade-Pristina dialogue in Brussels is also crucial and there is no actual progress without it, he noted.
