Popular illegal download website shut down, owner arrested

A 37-year-old man running a file-sharing website has been arrested for disseminating unlicensed films and television series online without having purchased the rights, the police said Friday.

His website, which was not named, is said to have been the second-most popular of its kind in Greece, with around 500,000 users. Losses to the state from the illegal downloads are estimated by the Greek copyright authority at around 1.4 million euros.

Investigators also found cash at the suspect?s property that they believe came from advertising revenues, which he did not pay any taxes on.
