We expect Italy's support in opening chapters

BELGRADE - It is very important for Serbia to open the first chapters in accession negotiations with the European Union as soon as possible and it expects Italy to support these efforts, President Tomislav Nikolic said during a meeting he had with Italian Foreign Minister Paolo Gentiloni in Belgrade Tuesday.

"Serbia has been on the path of European integration for 15 years now; we have done a lot and it is therefore very important for us now to see the first chapters opened as soon as possible, so that the citizens of our country could see what the difficult measures we are taking are for," said Nikolic.

The economic measures undertaken by Serbia show our determination to bring about financial consolidation, while Euro-integration is now an irreversible process on the country's foreign policy agenda, said Nikolic, according to a release from the president's press office.

The Italian foreign minister said that he expected positive developments on Serbia's European integration path very soon.

Gentiloni said that good economic relations between Italy and Serbia have become even more strong with political relations improving, the release said.
