Veselinovic: Gotovina's appointment is part of HDZ campaign

BELGRADE - Chairman of the Serbian Parliament's Committee on the Diaspora and Serbs in the Region Janko Veselinovic said Monday that the appointment of Ante Gotovina as an advisor to Croatian President Kolinda Grabar Kitarovic is not the kind of news to which the Serbs in Croatia and Serbia could be indifferent.

This is a way for the Croatian president to continue her election campaign and help her party (Croatian Democratic Union, HDZ) in the coming elections, Veselinovic told a press conference, adding that, in his opinion, campaigns that affect the issues of status and position of the national minorities are not a good move.

Grabar Kitarovic, who resigned HDZ membership after being elected as president in February, appointed recently generals Ante Gotovina and Mladen Markac as advisors with the Homeland Security Council.

Gotovina and Markac were convicted in April 2011 for war crimes against Serbs in the first-instance judgment of the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia (ICTY). However, the ICTY Appeals Chamber cleared both generals of all charges in November 2012.
