Kastellorizo's desalination unit to be fixed

Funds are to be released for repair work on a desalination plant on Kastellorizo, putting an end to the expensive practice of carrying water to the small island.

The government has approved a payment of 47,500 euros to the island?s municipality to carry out the repairs. The move will save taxpayers? money even over the short term as the state had to pay 43,000 euros to the navy to transport water to the island over the last few months and agreed to pay a private firm another 53,000 euros to do so until the beginning of June.

The desalination plant on Kastellorizo, the smallest of the Dodecanese islands, is capable of producing 200 cubic meters of water per day.
