Nikolic unveils monument to Prince Milos Obrenovic

POZEGA - President Tomislav Nikolic unveiled in Pozega on Thursday a monument to Prince Milos Obrenovic, leader of the Second Serbian Uprising against the Ottoman rule.

The monument was unveiled to mark the two hundred years since the uprising, which broke out on April 23, 1815 in Takovo.

This is our way to pay tribute to one of the most significant figures in the history of Serbia, President Nikolic said at the ceremony.

Prince Milos laid the foundation for the state and the army of Serbia, but he also deserves credit for the Pozega town square, built in 1832, and other modern, urban ideas of the time which contributed to the development of this quaint old town in eastern Serbia, noted the president.

Nikolic also visited a memorial complex dedicated to Prince Milos Obrenovic, in the village of Gornja Dobrinja where he was born.

The president lit candles in the Church of Sts. Peter and Paul, the endowment of Prince Milos, to pay tribute to the fallen insurgents, and attended a ceremony marking the beginning of Second Serbian Uprising.
