Romania's Daniel Ionita, UN's Angela Kane talk on nuclear non-proliferation, in New York

The Secretary of state for Strategic Affairs, Daniel Ionita has met on Wednesday, in New York, with the United Nations' High Representative for Disarmament, Angela Kane, the two talking mainly about the efforts of the international community in the implementation of the Treaty on Nuclear Weapons' Non-proliferation, a press release sent AGERPRES on Thursday by the Foreign Affairs Ministry (MAE), informs.

According to the source, the two dignitaries have also tackled the chemical weapons' situation of Syria.

The meeting took place in the context of the Romanian official's participation over April 27-29 in the segment of the debates at high level of the Assessment Conference (RevCon) of the said treaty (NPT), which took place at the United Nation's Hqs. in New York.

During the meeting, says the MAE release, the UN High Representative noticed the 'active involvement' of Romania to ensuring the good development of the Conference through ambassador Cristian Istrate, the permanent representative of Romania to Vienna, who has been elected on April 27 2015 as chairman of the RevCon Main Committee 2.

"This committee will analyse the enforcement of the Treaty in all fields of the nuclear non-proliferation and of the IAEA (International Atomic Energy Agency) for Guarantees system, as well as the evolutions in the nuclear weapons free areas,' says the source.

In his turn, the Bucharest official reiterated Romania's wish to continue on the same coordinates "the excellent cooperation" with the UN Office for Disarmament Affairs, especially as regards the matter of conventional weaponry control.
