Romania presides over Main Committee II of Non-Proliferation Treaty Conference

Romania presides the Main Committee II of the April 27 - May 22 Conference for the Evaluation of the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) in New York.

According to a release of the Foreign Affairs Ministry to AGERPRES on Monday, this reconfirms the importance of the multilateral efforts of the Romanian diplomacy on major files of global security and non-proliferation of weapons of mass destruction.

The works of the Main Committee II for Non-Proliferation are held from May 4 through 15, under the presidency of Ambassador Cristian Istrate, Romania's permanent representative at the international organizations based in Vienna.

"During the session of the Main Committee II, the 190 signatory states of the NPT will analyse the state of the implementation of their commitments in the field of non-proliferation of nuclear weapons, nuclear guarantees and areas free of nuclear weapons (...) through the optics of the Action Plan adopted by the Evaluation Conference in 2010; they will set the steps to follow for completing the implementation of the Action Plan and for consolidating the Treaty," MAE's document reads.

The same source adds that relevant themes will be discussed within this context, including through the promotion and enhancement of nuclear guarantees and nuclear security, the regional non-proliferation, the implementation of the 1995 Resolution on the Middle East, and the cases of infringement of the NPT.
