Bicycles popular but not yet part of day-to-day life, study finds

One in four Greeks has a bicycle but only 3 percent use it as one of their main modes of transport and just 32 percent of owners have used their bikes over the last 12 months, according to a survey carried out on behalf of the Greek branch of WWF.

According to the Public Issue poll, 27 percent of bike owners said that the lack of infrastructure, including cycling lanes, puts them off using their bikes more often, while 23 percent said they are deterred because of concerns about their safety.

Also, 15 percent of Athenians said they have never ridden a bicycle, while 40 percent said they have not used a bicycle since childhood.
